Gear

“Its not what you have…. It’s how you use it”

My backpack weighs a ton! There’s a reason for it.

I carry a lot of gear with me out in the field. Some might say too much…..

I get quite a few questions about the equipment I use. From the typical “That’s a good photo, you must have a good camera?” to the more obscure, “How fast can your drone fly?”

I don’t carry everything with me all at once but here’s a list of my current gear for those who might be interested…

Cameras:

Nikon Z7 - Full frame and mirrorless. My new landscape photography camera of choice. Once I tried mirrorless there was no going back. My DSLR cameras have now all been sold.

Nikon Z6 - Another full frame mirrorless. Used mostly for video work. Its an incredibly versatile camera.

Nikon Z fc - Compact and light mirrorless DX format camera. Use it when taking the Z7 or Z6 would be overkill. I wish it had IBIS but you cannot have everything. Love the retro looks too.

Nikon D5000 - My latest toy. D5000 converted to shoot infrared at 720nm wavelength.

Insta 360 X3 - 360 degrees of loveliness. Replaced my Ricoh Theta V and GoPro Hero 4 with one camera.

DJI OSMO Pocket 3 - This camera has so many features, the motionlapse being a real favourite. All in a super compact package and a 3-axis stabilized gimble too.

Lenses:

Z Mount:

Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-30 mm f/4 S - Ultra wide angle zoom. Fantastic edge to edge sharpness. Always with me when out shooting landscapes.

Nikon Z 24-200mm f4-6.3 VR Lens - Do it all, everyday lens.

Nikon Z 16-50mm f3.5-6.3 DX VR - DX format kits lens that came with the Z fc. Not the greatest image quality but practically a pancake lens making it super compact for traveling light.

Viltrox AF 13mm f1.4 Z - APS-C lens for the Z fc. Used primarily for video work.

Viltrox AF 24mm f1.8 Z - Full fram lens. Used for video work on the Z7 & 6 and also for Astro photography.

F Mount:

Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 (C) DG OS HSM - Hyper-telephoto zoom, equivalent of 900mm when used on DX format cameras. Used for motorsport and wildlife mainly.

Sigma 100-400mm f5-6.3 (C) DG OS HSM - I tend to almost always have this in my bag when I’m in the hills and mountains. The 400mm end of the lens really helps pull compositions out of the landscape.

Drone:

DJI Mini Pro 4 - Small enough to fit in my backpack. Loads of features and fantastic video and stills performance.

Tripods:

Benro TMA37C Mach 3 - Wanted a really solid tripod and paired it with the GD3WH geared head. Carbon fibre keeps the weight down. My tripod of choice.

3 Legged Thing Winston 2.0 Tripod System - Amazing quality and used when I need to pack a little lighter than the Benro.

3 Legged Thing PUNKS Billy 2.0 Tripod System - A great light weight Carbon tripod.

K&F Concept KF-TC-2335 - Super light and compact travel tripod

Other:

3 Legged Thing ZELDA - L bracket designed to specifically fit the Z7 & Z6

SmallRig L Shaped Grip - An amazingly well made product as usual from SmallRig. Adds a grip and an Arca compatible plate to the Z fc.

Kase Wolverine Magnetic Circular Filters - Fantastic filter system. The quality is amazing and the magnetic attachment makes them easy and quick to use..

Shoot Intervaometer - Cheap, generic timer. Absolute must for long exposure photography.

Shimoda Action X50 Backpack - Great bag with loads of storage and features.

Canon PROGRAF PRO-300 Printer - Allows printing up to A3+ size using Lucia Pro pigment inks. As a professional level printer, the finished images look as good as you would expect.
