Different Seasons

When it comes to landscape photography, there are so many variables that determine how a final image will look. The light can change in a moment, the weather can turn in the blink of an eye but one aspect is a certain: the seasons will always change.

Each season brings its own advantages and disadvantages to the landscape photographer. Most favour the colours of Autumn but even the depths of winter can have its moments. Summer can be slog, with soulless blue skies and sunrises and sunsets at unsociable hours but adapting is the key. Tailoring your expectations and choosing locations well.

If you find a location that has potential, don’t dismiss it based on the current conditions. Even if you are happy and walk away with an image for your portfolio, it is always worth considering how the location will look in a different season or under different light. Return to those locations and you may well find yourself rewarded.

I recently revisited Dinorwic in North Wales. Having previously visited in the depths of Winter when the grey moody skies suited the bleak abandoned workers barracks. This time with Spring colour all around, the trees and rocks covered in vibrant green moss and lichen a totally different mood could be captured. Its a fantastic location year round and one I’ll no doubt be returning to again and again.
